Why Doesn’t Hover Sell More Stuff?

In the world of domain names, Hover is a pretty unique service when compared to the many other options out there. Some will host your site for you as well. Some will enable you to build your entire website. Some will help you sell your domain name. Some will do all of these things and many more. That’s great for these services and many of them are doing exceptionally well, but Hover likes to take a different approach.
What sets Hover apart is that we don’t do any of that extra stuff. We sell domain names and email. That’s it. I know this probably sounds strange at first – believe me, we’ve heard all of the questions before. “What if I want all of that extra stuff?” “Wouldn’t you make more money if you sold more things?” Those are certainly valid points, but we’ve proven that forgetting about these extras and focusing on our core offerings is viable as well.
To settle the matter once and for all, here’s a breakdown of why we keep things simple and don’t sell more things:
We Love Domain Names
Ok, this is a pretty general statement and we’re definitely not the only domain registrar that loves domain names. What I mean by this is that we believe in the value of a domain name. We don’t think of a domain name as something insignificant that you tack onto your website right before launching it. This is primarily where services that include domain names as part of a package fall short, only searching through the cheapest and most commonly used top-level domains. This makes it hard to find the best option available.
Your domain name is your online identity, and so it’s important that you get the best one possible. By focusing our entire service on domain names, we’re able to help you get one that’s absolutely perfect. We have hundreds of top-level domains (TLDs) to choose from and are constantly adding more. We also categorize search results based on TLDs to help you find your name with a TLD that is most relevant to you. Everything we do is done with the goal of allowing you to quickly get a domain name that you’re thrilled with and can’t wait to use for whatever project you’re working on.
We Want You To Focus On You
Not to brag or anything but we’ve got a lot of great people that have used Hover for really cool projects (for starters, check out Jonathan Mann and Hrishikesh Hirway). We love that you’re busy working away on whatever you’re most passionate about, which is why we want to be there when you need us and out of the way as fast as we possibly can. You shouldn’t have to go through 5 pages declining add-ons that you don’t need. You shouldn’t have to spend 10 minutes trying to find where your domain forwards to. All of this is time spent away from whatever you really want to be doing, and we’re not ashamed to admit that managing your domain name is not the highest item on your things that you love to do. Hover’s there when you need it, but won’t keep you there when you don’t need to be.
We Want You To Be Happy
I know, I know, this is a really cheesy thing to say, but it’s true! It’s important to us that you’re always delighted when it comes to Hover; you’ll stick around with us for longer and might just even recommend us to your friends when they’re looking for their own domains.
We keep our customers happy in a number of key ways: we make our search easy to quickly find a great domain name; we make it simple to manage your domain; we don’t try to get you to buy products that you don’t need and will later feel ripped off for purchasing, and; we have real human humans in customer support that will pick up the phone right away and be able to answer whatever question you have.
We’re A Small Team
You might not realize it, but Hover is actually a pretty small team. We’ve got a Product Manager, 2 Developers, 2 Marketers, a Designer, a General Manager and 15 Customer Advisors. That’s pretty small as it is, but also keep in mind that some of our team also have responsibilities with other services at our parent company Tucows as well. So yeah…small team – and we’re darn proud of it!
Part of the reason why we don’t sell more things is due to the limited resources we’ve got available. Every new feature that we sell needs to be developed, maintained and improved, and that’s incredibly difficult to do with such a small team. That’s why any feature that we do introduce is something that we know people will love and will be of great value. Plus, we’ve learned that people like the limited offerings approach since it lets them quickly get what they came for without having to swim through an endless barrage of pages, offers and add-ons.
